How is outfit count actually calculated?
Category counts are multiplied, not added. Three tops and four bottoms do not give 3 + 4 = 7 outfits; they give 3 × 4 = 12. Add two outer layers — and since wearing no layer is itself an option — you get 12 × 3 = 36.
The real insight: a single piece added to one category multiplies against every other category. Buying a fourth top does not gain you one outfit, it gains you 4 × 4 × 3 = 48, that is twelve more. Spend the same money on a fourth pair of trousers and you get 3 × 5 × 3 = 45. Which category is thin matters more than how many pieces you own.

How does the compatibility ratio cut the multiplication?
The share of possible pairings you would actually wear shrinks the product directly. Multiply the theoretical count by that ratio and you get the real one.

Why does a neutral base raise the ratio?
Neutrals do not compete for the accent role. Cream, beige, navy, grey and black are low in saturation, so they do not override the piece next to them — which lets each of them pair with more pieces.
The practical rule follows: stay neutral in bottoms and outerwear, put the accent in tops. In that structure every new top works with all existing bottoms — it is added to the largest factor in the multiplication.

Boundary: a neutral base is a safety net, not a requirement. If you already have a consistent palette — all earth tones, say — a non-neutral base gives a high ratio too.
How do you spot the gap in your wardrobe?
By looking at what you cannot combine, not at what you bought. If you keep wearing the same two pairs of trousers, the missing piece is not trousers, it is a top that works with them.

Should a piece you never wear be discarded?
No — try it in a different context first. A piece unworn for a season is usually not the wrong piece but a wrongly paired one.
To separate dead weight from a misplaced piece, make it the anchor and try to build around it. If no context produces an answer, it is genuinely dead weight; if even one context works, the problem was never the piece — it was that the piece had never been tried.
Boundary: this test is not free, it costs time. With a large wardrobe it is more efficient to review category by category than piece by piece.
